Blogging for Business Series Part 3

The third blog in the Blogging for Business series will give you some structure, and guidelines on how to write business-based blog posts that are interesting for your customers, will help drive more traffic to your website, and ultimately, attract new clients to your business.

The strategy and tactics below will outline a plan that will help you write effective and efficient blogging content that will attract more traffic to your website and build the visibility of your business.

Characteristics of a Business-Driven Blog Post

When I talk to clients and even my colleagues, one thing they report struggling with is knowing they have to blog, knowing they have to get something on their website, but just putting something out there just for the sake of it. The content doesn’t really connect to their ideal client or customer’s needs. A business-driven blog post will help you establish trust with potential clients and your existing network.

When you’re creating your blog post ideas and strategy, do a self-check.

  • Do your ideas excite you?
  • Ask yourself, is this blog helping my customer make a more informed decision about working with me?
  • Is it something you can share?

You also want to think about how can you help clients learn more about what they might need and how you can help them. Success from social media and online marketing will often build momentum and the more you can help your ideal customer relate to you and connect with you, the better.

I often think about old-fashion business sense, when people didn’t have telephones. They would instead make personal visits to their customers and give them information or help them decide what they were going to buy next.

Good Old-Fashion Business Sense

In an ever-changing landscape of technology and social media platforms, this old-fashioned approach to online marketing is all about building a foundational strategy of engagement and relationship-building, trust-building, and consistency.

When I’m posting on social media or creating blog posts, I focus on how I can help my current customers and clients, and ultimately, engage them with the topics.

I aim to have posts that are:

  • Helpful
  • Curious
  • Honest
  • Open
  • Active
  • Genuine
  • Consistent
  • Strategic
  • Purposeful

Focusing on these points will not only help your client but also encourage them to engage with you in return while building relationships with your community and the people that you ultimately want to work with.

Types of Blog Posts That Don’t Require Writing

Not everyone is great with words or wants to spend time physically writing blog posts, but there are many ways to give people tips or downloadable sheets that are visual instead. This is where you can be creative and come up with content without actually having to write it, but it takes some strategies.

You could try:

  • Putting together a photo gallery.
  • Behind-the-scenes pictures or videos of your work and lifestyle.
  • Create a slide show of your offerings or work.
  • Record a video tip.
  • Create a slide show.
  • Do a recording of you speaking about your business.
  • Create an infographic.

One of my recent favourites things to use with my blog is the Twitter feed widget.

After going on Twitter, I search out a keyword or hashtag and use the code provided by Twitter to regenerate that on my website. This allows my followers to hear and read all the information about a certain hashtag or topic that people are talking about. It’s exciting to combine social media with your website.
